Jonathan Orkin practices in several areas of law, with a primary focus on divorce, child custody, and child support litigation. He is trained in Collaborative Law and belongs to the Ithaca Area Collaborative Professionals. Whether through litigation or collaboration, Jon takes time to fully understand his clients’ needs and goals. He never cuts corners and works tirelessly to achieve the best outcomes. He is known for his tenacity, determination, and the compassion he shows his clients.
Jon has practiced law in Ithaca and surrounding counties since June 1983. He began his career as a general practitioner, handling real estate, commercial transactions, and simple wills. This broad foundation helped him transition smoothly into domestic relations litigation. He also serves as the attorney for the Ithaca Housing Authority.
Since 1990, Jon has lectured in the trial advocacy program at Cornell University School of Law. He also serves as Town Justice for the Town of Genoa, New York, and is an active member of the King Ferry Fire Department.
Jon is a proud father of two and has lived and worked in the Ithaca area for nearly fifty years. He arrived in 1971 as a freshman at Ithaca College. In 1974, he student-taught at the New Program Junior High during its first year. After earning his master’s degree at the University of Michigan, he returned to Ithaca to teach social studies. He played a key role in founding the Alternative Community School. That school and the New Program later merged to become the Lehman Alternative School, now an important part of Ithaca’s public education system.
In 1980, Jon left teaching to attend Syracuse Law School. He earned his Juris Doctor in 1982. While there, he served on the law review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif.
