Steven L. Foss

Steve Foss is an associate with the firm’s Litigation Practice Group, focusing on commercial and trust and estate litigation.

Experience

Prior to joining the firm, Steve served as a judicial law clerk and worked for a regional law firm advising public and private sector clients on a diverse range of labor and employment matters. A substantial portion of his practice involved representing clients in employment discrimination proceedings before the New York State Division of Human Rights and federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where he achieved several favorable and cost-effective results for his clients. Steve also advised clients on employee handbooks, accommodation requests, federal and state employee leave and benefit laws (including those related to COVID-19), wage and hour disputes, and various other labor and employment issues. He believes that an understanding of diverse areas of law is critical to holistic client counseling, and since the start of his career has endeavored to develop his knowledge of different legal areas and issues.

Background

Originally from New Jersey, Steve attended Binghamton University as an undergraduate and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Law.  He worked as a paralegal at a small civil litigation firm for nearly two years before attending Syracuse University College of Law.  During his time in law school Steve studied a wide range of subjects, earning the highest grade in both Comparative Law and New York Civil Practice courses.  He was also a researcher for the Syrian Accountability Project, a legal extern for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an editor for the Syracuse Law Review, and a teaching assistant for a course in appellate advocacy. Steve graduated law school magna cum laude and is a member of the Justinian Honorary Law Society and the Order of the Coif.

Steve enjoys advising clients to help them solve their legal problems, in whatever form they may take.  He believes that actively listening to client concerns and priorities is essential to effective advocacy, and strives to achieve his clients’ goals in all cases.

Steve lives in Ithaca with his wife and dog.  In his free time he enjoys practicing meditation, exploring local parks, and playing lawn games with friends.
