Bousquet Holstein is excited to announce it’s 8th Annual Photography Contest for Syracuse City and Onondaga County high school students in grades 9 through 12. The inspiration for this year’s theme again comes from an exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art. This year’s theme, Street Scenes, is based on the Everson Museum of Art’s exhibition: Helen Levitt: In the Street. According to the Syracuse New Times: “Helen Levitt: In the Street, showcases an artist who shot New York City streets for almost 70 years, creating poignant and humorous photos referencing people, place and the feel of city life. .. . Levitt’s one-woman exhibit demonstrates how she approached city streets with fresh eyes and an ability to avoid clichés. . . Levitt interpreted everyday scenes, documenting how ordinary people used public space.” The Helen Levitt exhibit will be open at the Everson Museum through May 8th, and there is an educator’s resource guide to the exhibit available on the Everson website.
For this year’s photo contest, we ask students to discover and capture the lives of people in street scenes, neighborhoods, and family gatherings while revealing poignant, humorous, or exuberant moments. We challenge young photographers to capture the humanity to their subjects, whether through photos of exuberant and improvised play, or ageless themes of family, day-to-day life, and human interaction. The idea is to demonstrate that photography can be an active and socially-engaged tool speaking a language that reveals transcendent human themes.
Click here, to download an entry form which also details contest rules, deadlines, and judging criteria. Image entries must be received by Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place photographs and to the visual arts department of the 1st Place winning school.
Bousquet Holstein PLLC and its members have been consistent supporters of the arts and education in our city and county. We plan to feature the 1st Place winning photograph on our 2016 Thanksgiving card which is sent to more than 4,000 clients of our law firm. In addition to the winning image, we credit the student photographer and provide information about the subject matter and inspiration of the photograph. In late October, we will host a showing of the top 20 entries. We host a reception for all 20 finalists and their immediate families and teachers at which time the winning photo will be announced. In the past, the winning images have been showcased in local newspapers and many schools chose to congratulate their winning students in their monthly newsletters to parents.
